AED builds on the skills learned in CPR and first aid courses,
and provides knowledge of how the heart works and what goes wrong
when defibrillation is required. Participants learn when and how to
operate an automated external defibrillator including AED
maintenance, data management, and reporting protocols required
following an incident.
Prerequisite: Lifesaving Society CPR-A or
Evaluation & certification: Current
Lifesaving Instructors or Standard First Aid Instructors may teach,
evaluate and certify AED candidates. The Lifesaving Society deems
its certifications to be "current" for 24 months from the
Candidate recognition: Certification card.

- Demonstrate knowledge of when to use and how to operate an
Automated External Defibrillator (AED), including maintenance of
AED unit, data managmeent and reporting protocols.
- Demonstrate one- and two-rescuer adult and child automated
external defibrillation on a manikin.
