Basic swimming ability is a fundamental requirement in any
meaningful attempt to eliminate drowning in Canada.
The Lifesaving Society offers training programs from
learn-to-swim through advanced lifesaving, lifeguarding and
leadership. Contact your local municipal pool, Y, summer
camp, school, college or university.
Until 2004 when 433 drowning deaths were recorded, there was a

resurgence. There were 483 water-related fatalities in 2010 (the
most recent year for which we have complete national data).
